2008 Honoree Biographies


PAMELA A. BROWNER-CRAWLEY

Pamela Browner-Crawley is the Senior Vice President and Director of Public Affairs for Citizens Bank, one of the nation’s top ten national banks.  Her primary responsibility is to enhance Citizens Bank’s corporate reputation and build a sustainable competitive brand throughout the Mid-Atlantic region.  A former ABC News broadcast journalist, Ms. Browner-Crawley has spent more than 20 years in the corporate communications field.  In April 2005, Browner-Crawley was named one of the “50 Best Women in Business” by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and in 2006, was profiled in the book, Voices, published by the PA Council on Women.  As a stalwart supporter of issues impacting the economic health of the community, Ms. Browner-Crawley serves on the board of both the PA and the Philadelphia Workforce Investment Boards, the Commonwealth’s Commission on College and Career Success and the Manchester Bidwell Philadelphia Task Force.  Ms. Browner-Crawley was recently appointed to the Widener University Board of Trustees and has been recognized as a 2007 Woman of Distinction by the Philadelphia Business Journal.


MARCIENE S. MATTLEMAN, Ed.D.

Marciene S. Mattleman is the president of ASAP/After School Activities Partnerships, which rallies the Greater Philadelphia community to increase after school enrichment clubs for the city’s youth. Two-hundred twenty-five chess clubs are among the close to 1,000 clubs ASAP has organized-- all of which foster skills, discipline, teamwork, and respect for rules. Dr. Mattleman was a professor of English Education at Temple University before founding five non-profit organizations, all still thriving. Both the Mayor’s Commission on Literacy and Philadelphia Reads were organized in the administrations of Mayors Wilson Goode and Ed Rendell respectively. Dr. Mattleman was honored at the White House by President Bill Clinton for Philadelphia Futures, where she continues as a board member, and he appointed her to the National Institute of Literacy, which she chaired. Currently, Dr. Mattleman also serves on the boards of the Pennsylvania Commission for Women; City Year, and the Public Interest Law Center of Philadelphia among others. She has recently been elected a Distinguished Daughter of Pennsylvania.


NILDA IRIS RUIZ, MBA

Nilda Iris Ruiz is chief executive officer of the Asociación Puertorriqueños En Marcha, Inc. (APM).  APM was founded 35 years ago and is one of the largest Hispanic non-profit organizations in Pennsylvania involved with social services, health promotions, primary care, community development, education and child services. Formerly the Senior Community Development Director for the National Council of La Raza (NCLR), Ms. Ruiz has worked in the community development field for the past 12 years, predominantly in Hispanic communities. Raised in North Philadelphia, the daughter of Puerto Rican parents who migrated to the mainland without English language skills, Ms. Ruiz understands the issues and needs of Hispanics and others facing urban poverty.  In addition to her work, Ms. Ruiz is involved in various trade organizations where she has served as an active board member and officer, assisting in shaping policy geared toward low-income communities.
